Description

Breakers is set on 2 acres of native bush and landscaped gardens and overlooks the Tasman Sea at Nine Mile beach. Stephen and Jan love New Zealand and all it has to offer the people of New Zealand and visitors to the area.

At Breakers we work hard to support our beautiful country by undertaking a number of actions. Many of these you will not see, but some you may notice.

Some actions that you may not see are installing low-flush toilet options, taps/shower heads which use less water, buying local produce where possible, composting our organic waste, using low-energy lighting/motion sensors, use of environmental friendly cleaning products and donating unwanted items to charity. We follow the three "R"s policy of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle where possible and endeavour to help keep New Zealand and the West Coast a clean, green environment.

We endeavour to turn off lights and equipment when not in use (or when we leave the room). No equipment is left on standby after a guest has vacated our rooms.

Guests have the option to not have their towels changed daily. All laundry is line dried and the dryer is only used when absolutely necessary.

We use motion sensors to control lighting for all our outdoor lighting, in our main entrance and stairwell and eco-light fittings or bulbs are used in all rooms.

We are on rainwater – collected from the roof into our tanks and then filtered. Even so, we turn off taps when we are not directly using the water (i.e. brushing our teeth, having a wash), use cold water for our laundry washes and the majority of our water heating is gas. In winter we use dehumidifiers in our guest rooms after rooms are vacated thus meaning that rooms heat more quickly and easily.

We monitor energy consumption regularly to identify abnormal consumption and are continually evaluating and implementing further energy saving practices where possible.

We are actively involved with the West Coast Blue Penguin Trust with the local stoat control programme for Nine Mile Creek. We offer our guests the opportunity of contributing to this worthy cause with a donation box in our guest lounge. All proceeds go towards more stoat traps and bait to help protect both the penguins in our area and our natural birdlife.

We also support two local children's charities as well as the Super Maori Fullas and their efforts in awareness of family violence.

We hope you leave Breakers knowing that your support and actions help us maintain or enhance our lovely region of the West Coast and of New Zealand.
