Very interesting. Since I could not compress everything that I had to say about this and some of the comments below, into 400 words, I have posted my comments here:

The post is entitled "Long live plastic bottles!"

Interesting comments. So what do you think a suitable alternative is eco-bottles or oil products? Which of these types two bottles would you choose first for the shelf?

And just out of interest what is an estimated time for eco-bottles to decompose?

The comments below highlight the confusion that exists amongst the NZ public.

When evaluating this product please accept one undeniable fact first - we have to stop making disposible packaging out of oil. If you agree with this then you look at alternatives. Sure the eco-bottle is not perfect . . . but don't let perfect get in the way of better.

Bottled water in general is a brutally indulgent product but this innovation goes some way to make it more sustainable. People want hydration on the go and now have a chance to do it ethically.

Another truth that needs clarification is that this bottle does not contaminate the recycling stream. FACT: No bottles are recycled in NZ! The opportunity is that if enough people support this product then it can be recycled here and far more effectively than a toxic petro chemical bottle!

These bottles are currently unrecyclable in NZ. They need tempratures of 400 degrees celcius to breakdown, and when put in a recycling bin only serve to contaminate the entire load. This renders it useless, and must be put into landfill anyway. All this hype marketing is actually dertrimental to the waste minimisation process. Is that honest?

Also, because its sustainable now does that justify such a huge price rise?

My understanding is that these type of plant based products are made from non-edible bi-products such as corn starch? Can anyone clarify this?

You're right about oil, but using farm land to "grow" packaging is even less sustainable. Do the math and discover that, if we used plant material to make all of our packaging, we would run out of land and resources to grow food. And, run an analysis on the carbon footprint of growing the plants and turning them into oil - I guarantee that you'll find a worse outcome than traditional plastics.
