Description
Yes the first ever Cornerstone home to enter any competition took out 2 x National prizes in the Master builders competition for 2008. The "DBH (Dept of Building & Housing) -Best sustainable house under $500,000", & the "Pink Batts Ultra -Award Best energy efficient home", with the judges quoting : "the innovative wall system as the highlight of the home with double the code requirements." February 09 edition of "Codewords", the DBH industry news.
"Cornerstone Building System" is a Structural Insulated panel (SIP) building system also known as Insulated Concrete Form (ICF). This type of construction is forging it's way to be the preferred building system for NOW and way into the FUTURE...Even if oil (of which polystyrene is made from the waste or by product ) ran out one day polystyrene can be made from Orange peel or the polymar from wood waste. Actually, Polystyrene is 98% Air and only 2% matter, and the Cornerstone Building system is 90% Polystyrene and 10% reinforced concrete, so nothing to rot or break down which I am sure we all like the security of a solid building. Best to build for longevity rather than the throw away thinking we have adopted in New Zealand.
It consists of a minimum of 200mm thick polystyrene panel 1200mm wide and whatever the stud height you require.
The panels are rebated in such a way as to provide cavities for reinforced concrete posts and continuous bond beam to take the load from above.
The solid polystyrene forms the form work for the concrete along with the substrate if plastering over, insulation at twice the value required for the building code, and absorbs the shock of wind and earthquake. i.e. the bracing for the system. In terms of construction the system goes up quickly and we are achieving 4 process' at once saving time and money along with achieving lock up shell faster than conventional construction.
"Cornerstone Building System" not only ticks all the boxes for it's structural strength, but also has the highest insulation rating with an R value of 4.3m2degC/W. Using the "Cornerstone Building System" for the walls was the key feature for the 2008 DBH National award winning sustainable home under $500,000, and the 2008 Pink Batts National award for best energy efficient home.
The home owner can be comforted that the electricity will be minimal with the wall system and those wanting to go off the Nationa GRID will find it easy to achieve as the heating and cooling costs are approximately 30% of the total account, with the 35%+ to hot water heating it makes good sense to look at these areas first.
Fire test were undertaken by Branz to find the system exceeded expectations ,with insulation, structual adequacy, and integrity. Gases from polystyrene in fire is no different to burning white pine....we are all happy top put another log on the fire... In this case it is enclosed behind Gibralta board and whatever the external cladding is, so fire has to get there first and the main purpose is for a wall system to have Structural integrity to allow the occupants a path of escape to safety.
The building system is sustainable as it will stand up to the elements, insulation is the key to energy efficiency, less heating hardware required, efficiency in building at the same or less cost of the standard timber framed 4 x 2 construction for the external walls.
Save money on construction and save money on electricity.....Everyones a winner...with CORNERSTONE BUILDING SYSTEM
