Prometheus has been the pioneer of sustainable and responsible lending in New Zealand. Long before climate change, oil price hikes and environmental degradation started making headlines Prometheus had been supporting energy-efficiency, clean technologies, and waste minimisation activities throughout NZ.
Prometheus started in 1983 as a charitable trust (The Prometheus Foundation) and had evolved into a finance company (Prometheus Finance) by 1 April 2004. The Prometheus Foundation remains as a cornerstone shareholder along with the investment arms of two of Europe’s largest and longest established ethical/social banks (Triodos Bank and GLS Gemeinschaftsbank).
Prometheus has shown considerable foresight and leadership throughout it’s history. Prometheus’ core mission is to support and help develop businesses and projects that foster sustainable economic development and reduce the negative social and environmental impacts of our modern lifestyles.
We have lent to a range of activities that had been ignored or under-serviced by mainstream banks and financial organisations. We have been flexible and creative in finding ways to secure loans to community organisations and projects that were asset-poor but commitment-rich or had unconventional property ownership forms that discouraged other lenders.
Even more unusually, Prometheus has a commitment to transparency and reports regularly to its depositors and borrowers on the projects and activities it has been financing through its bi-annual newsletter (also available on our website).
Prometheus has built strong relationships throughout the sustainability sector and is now often the first port-of-call for businesses, communities and individuals throughout New Zealand wanting to develop an activity in this sector.
